My Dad made a porno

Apparently there is a popular podcast doing the rounds at the moment called “My Dad wrote a porno”.  A colleague mentioned this yesterday morning on the way to a meeting. My immediate internal response was, “Did I write that?”, at which point I blurted out ,”My dad made a porno!”. My colleague looked at me stunned for a moment, probably trying to ascertain whether I was joking or not, laughed a tad disbelievingly but no doubt made a mental note to find out more when we weren’t about to go in to a meeting. I said it matter of factly.

I’ve said this line quite a few times over the years.  I’m not in touch with my Dad anymore, to be frank he was a bit of an all round git, but I consider this statement to be one of the few, very few, gifts that my Dad ever gave me. Now I don’t mean a literal VHS copy of the said porno, that would be really twisted.  I’m glad to say I have never seen it, he apparently also starred in it and it was low budget, and pretty poor.  Going back to the statement as a gift, it’s a good statement. “Tell me something, I don’t know about you!” It’s an unexpected response. A memorable response. A good, weird story and these days it’s about story telling. In our media cluttered world, the only thing that can pull people away from a little screen and get their attention, if momentarily,  is a good, unexpected, entertaining story.

The above statement is one of the 6 gifts I was given by my dear old estranged Dad across my lifetime.

1. Life itself

2. Sales skills, which have led to my chosen career.

3. Creativity

4. THE statement.

Not forgetting,

5. & 6. The Tomy Pinball machine and white board (don’t ask) that he gave me for Xmas when I was 9.

So life,  career prospects, a creative mind, my gift statement, along with a few choice others that would rival a game of Cards Against Humanity. Actually perhaps I have done better out of him than I thought!

So here I’m going to focus on gift number 3. Creativity. I’ve toyed with writing a blog for a while. I like writing, in fact I love writing but these days between a more or less full time job, small web business, aspiring to be a kids picture book writer and two small children it tends to be a slight challenge to find the time. I like to be accountable to things. If I’m accountable then I get things done, it motivates me, so maybe by having a blog I will be accountable, be it to myself or anyone that fancies reading it.

Will anyone want to read it? What stands me apart from any other person to make me more readable or as readable as another. Who knows? Yes I think I have some funny tales, but funnier than anyone else’s? Probably not. Yes a few remarkable things have happened to me across my 30+ years but in general life is quite unremarkable. However sometimes people seek solace in knowing that the shit things, the boring things, the frustrating things that are happening to them are also happening to someone else.

So if at least one person can relate, one person can smile and one person might even share it with someone else for the same results,  then surely it’s worth it. Ultimately it gets me writing more which fulfills one of my New Years Resolutions, and it’s only January so happy days.

So here goes!

Oh and what I forgot to mention is some of my ramblings and observations on everyday life might be in rhyme, cos in the main that’s how I write!

  1. Excited to read more my old friend. I’ve been writing a weekly blog for the last eighteen months and it’s the bane of my existence but at the same time it’s highly effective in developing your literary chops. Funnily enough I had a similar resolution to you this year, except I am going to start a podcast I think. Maybe “My Dad made a porno” will inspire me to find a fitting title. Hope you’re all well; keep writing.

Hello lovely, a very warm welcome to the bloggersphere and well done for making the leap. You’ll love it round here. You’ve always been someone I’ve admired and respected and whilst we rarely spend time together in person hopefully this little outlet will be a connection of a different kind. Fathers are rather funny (not in the haha sense of the word) and unpredictable things, aren’t they? Like mine, after 8 months in a new relationship less than three years after my Mum died has gone and got remarried. That might have been ok if he hadn’t gone and binned all his existing family in the process, not to mention his newly arrived and first Grandchild. I mean, he hasn’t even made a porno that I can dine out on! But ce sera… Well done. A charming first post.

Well done on a great read. I saw the title, and even though I knew that information already, still gasped a little. “Did she really mean to write that?!’.

As well as I think I know you, this article has surprised me. So carry on going.

I’m looking forward to reading more. If you write “My Husband made a Porno” as your next blog I’m not sure how I’ll cope though.
